While no one knows the exact origin of Hawaiian quilting, it is believed that the missionaries who arrived in the 1800s introduced the concept of quilting. Long before the missionaries, native women were sewing & creating unique designs using their own cloth, kapa, made from the bark of the mulberry tree. Bed coverings were created from the kapa and were called kapa moe. Hawaiian quilts are distinctive in both there technique & design. The single applique design is a product of the artists imagination, a symbol of the plant.
